Why focusing on your mind rather than merely your body is essential to your success

Today in our lives, stress levels are extremely high due to a number of factors.  We therefore experience burnout, a product of too much stress for too long.  Because of this burnout we become fatigued and we tend to be less productive both in our relationships and in our work. Many work spaces have focused on wellness programs focusing on physical fitness, but mental fitness often plays a major role in our success in life and the workplace.  In this course we will focus on the mental advantage attainable through practicing a suite of daily tasks designed to enhance efficiency, productively, enabling best work product improving an organization’s profitability.

In this course you will learn to do a form of self-monitoring; what a psychologist named, Daniel J. Siegel calls “mindsight.” In The Social Animal, by David Brooks, the process you will undergo is described as:  ‘triggering an inner self that can dominate your behavior.’ All you will have to do is to focus your attention on that inner self. He writes, “Those who have habits and strategies to control their attention can control their lives.”  (Brooks, pg.131)  Being successful in life is about managing your thoughts, focusing your attention and being able to take the right action at the right time.

According to George Mumford, a meditation teacher who has worked with several athletic teams like Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers, “meditation increases an athlete’s chances of being in the zone, or playing at the highest level possible. This is because meditation heightens your mindfulness, or awareness, which permits you to immerse yourself to a greater degree in your surroundings and see what must be done at any given time.”  How does Meditation Help Athletes?, Jen Morel, 2011. This is also true of anyone in the game of life.

In the article How She Did It: Oprahs Success Factors, it states: “Oprah’s single-minded focus allowed her to concentrate all of her time and energy into achieving the life of her dreams.”  In 7 Steps to Making Better Decisions, it states: “Decision making is intrinsically linked to our emotions, so much so that when a person suffers damage to her orbital frontal cortex—a part of the brain just behind the eyes that’s strongly involved in processing emotions—she can lose her decision-making ability entirely.”  In Mental Advantage you learn to control your emotions and the speech that accompanies them, to move you closer to you and organization achievement goals.

Dr. Oz and most health professionals have identified the connection between good nutrition and a healthy mind.  In Mental Advantage you will receive general nutrition guidelines that will assist you in sharpening your mind’s focus to achieve goals.

For this course to be effective you must first do the exercises diligently, consistently, and fully.  Your attitude and perseverance will determine your level of success.  This course is not the end of the process of gaining control over your mind.  It is the beginning.  Upon graduating you will have the tools needed to succeed.  However, you must continue to hone them by practicing the exercises to challenge and grow your mastery of the skills.

  • You may structure Mental Advantage to be completed by each of your employees individually, as partners, or in small groups of four, depending on the culture of your organization Working in small groups or as partners has the added benefit of establishing support systems to view the videos and discuss progress.  This tends to build upon the social structure already existing in the organizations and natural leaders emerge to keep employees on schedule and energized about the program.  When done as individuals, consistent reminders of course assignments for the week included in newsletters and bulletins can accomplish the same result, so that employees feel a team spirit throughout the program.
